John Freiburger, of FCC, Inc., shared his vast knowledge of the science and art of masonry inspection from Vitruvius to today!
This well-illustrated presentation will familiarize you with the types of masonry inspectors meet in their profession. In a hundred slides we’ll discuss a brief history of masonry, identify the basic types of masonry and review the properties of each system. We’ll discuss the elements of mass wall, cavity wall, and thin veneer masonry, the issues that arise with defects in each type, and how to recognize them. We’ll provide suggestions for report language and the basis inspectors may wish to use in their identification of masonry defects and recommendations for further review.
John Freiburger was a masonry and general contractor for forty years and has inspected more than ten thousand homes as well as commercial properties. He remains involved with expert witness work in construction defect cases, cases against home inspectors, and in historic restoration, with a focus on antique masonry work. His website, freiburgerconsulting.com, is a free educational resource where inspectors can access the masonry file for additional non-copyrighted information and publications they can study or provide for clients.
